When to light it
Shadow work belongs to the dark of the moon. Many witches light their shadow work candle on the new moon or the dark moon just before it, when the sky is empty and the energy is quiet and inward. Saturday, Saturn's day, is a traditional choice for boundaries, endings and hard truths. Samhain season, from mid-October through October 31, is the most natural time of the whole year for it. Any night you feel ready is valid, though. Readiness matters more than the calendar.
This October, the Libra New Moon on Saturday, October 10 is a gentle doorway in. Libra rules balance, so it's a good night to ask where you've been giving too much of yourself away.
A simple shadow work ritual
Make the space safe. Choose a quiet time, a fire-safe surface and a journal you can be honest in.
Ground first. Take three slow breaths with your feet on the floor.
Light the candle and ask one question. Try: "What part of me is ready to be seen?" or "What pattern keeps pulling me back?"
Write without judging. Let whatever comes up land on the page.
Close with care. Thank that part of yourself, choose one small action for the week, then snuff the flame. Drink water and eat something to ground.
